Hiking

The two best best hiking adventures in this area are at the Rincon de la Vieja National Park and the Tenorio National Park, both about an hour’s drive from here. Rincon has a variety of marked trails ranging length and in degrees of difficulty. You can hike trails to hidden waterfalls past fumaroles and bubbling mud pits. At the Tenorio National Park you will hike along the Rio Celeste, one of the park’s treasures. The main trail splits, and a path leads leftward to a steep descent down muddy steps made of sections of tree trunks. After an unexpected turn, the river finally makes an appearance in the form of an impressive waterfall. The Río Celeste’s color is a true natural wonder. Local legend says that when God painted the sky, she washed her blue brushes in this river, and that is how its waters obtained their magnificent blue color. You will have the opportunity to see tapirs, peccaries, capybaras, tropical birds and unique flora at both National Parks.
