My husband and I recently stayed at Rancho for our honeymoon and loved it. I did a ton of research on many different destinations for our trip and decided on Costa Rica and Rancho Armadillo b/c of the beautiful scenery, exotic location, friendly locals, exciting excursions and great reviews from Trip Advisor. ......If you are used to staying in a large all inclusive and having a tour guide drive you and 20 other people to an excursion this is not the place to stay. If you love adventure and can handle renting a car and driving with the locals then you will love this vacation. Rick the owner went so above and beyond from the first email I sent to him. He will give you great advice and ideas for planning your trip. If you are planning to stay there I suggest you get his advice before you make any plans. I did all of the planning so when my husband and I arrived in Costa Rica he was a bit nervous. Rick took all of our worries away. The resort was a little hidden paradise. Rick gives you a great at home feeling and also has so much knowledge of the plants and animals on the estate. The rooms are very low key but well kept and you don't ever have to worry about your stuff getting stolen. The pool and bar/restaurant area was so relaxing and beautiful.

Tom, Nancy, and I all arrived safely in the US with all of our luggage. It was a most uneventful trip home as compared with our travel in Costa Rica.
We miss the fresh fruits for breakfast with conversation and all the fun that we had while visiting with you. Thanks for all of your helpfulness with our travel plans. We really appreciated your going the extra mile for your guests. The dinner was superb and we will never find one that will compare. We will pass the word along and maybe one day we can return. All the superlatives from previous reviews are true! We spent some of our honeymoon at Rancho Armadillo, and had an incredible time. One of the best things about it is the friendly atmosphere, which is all due to Rick, the owner. He spends time with and gets to know his guests, and helps the guests to get to know each other. He'll even help you plan your trip before you go, and gives great advice! He directed us to some less-touristy and very worthwhile activities. The grounds are very pretty, and the rooms comfortable. We'd go back in a second!

Hi Rick - Our stay was so much better than we ever imagined and your constant input and recommendations made all the difference between a good vacation and an outstanding one.  We cannot think of anything negative at all.  Your place really feels like being in someone's neat home, the rooms were comfortable, your dinner was outstanding, the other guests were interesting and varied, your tour and restaurant recommendations were right on.  And your extra efforts on our behalf to find out about Midnight mass and local fiestas were really appreciated.  Our teenage kids enjoyed themselves tremendously.  It was the right balance between chilling and interesting activities.  Your hammocks seem like a very distant memory by now. Rick and Debbie, An email subject header of "thanks" just doesn't really do justice to how much I appreciate being welcomed to Rancho Armadillo every January.  This trip was exactly what I needed, right when I needed it.  It was so great to be back in a place that I feel so welcomed and at home in.  Rick, I am going to put the pasta tip to the test tomorrow night.  Hopefully my dish will turn out as awesome as yours.  If you have any more of those kinds of tips or simple recipes to go along with them, I am forever a willing student.  Debbie, hope that you are enjoying the time with your family this week!  I assume that we saw all the wild life last week and it should be pretty quite around there for them over the next couple of days:)

Hola, Rick! Just a note to tell you and Debbie how much we appreciate all your extra special treatment while "in your care" in Costa Rica. From start (picking us up at the airport at midnight) to finish (our lovely exit photos), you helped make this one of our most memorable trips. We especially enjoyed the ambiance of your beautiful place; the breathtaking ocean views, the sunsets, the breakfasts, the pool, the hammocks, our lovely rooms, the landscaping and primitive artifacts, and fun and delicious dinners "in town" at Coco Beach!!! Rancho Armadillo certainly exceeded our expectations in making us feel comfortable and at home. Then there was Jaime!!! What a delightful, charming guide! (and to think he had attended school in Missouri, no less!) He, too, took excellent care of us while on our adventures to the volcano and rainforest. We felt as though he was our friend as well as our instructor of Tico culture and history. Again, Rick, muchisimas gracias por todo y ojala que regresemos pronto.

We returned to 32 f weather which isn't bad & it's quite sunny so the transition isn't as bad as I expected. Its's supposed to be 60 this weekend, albeit temporarily, but at least spring is around the corner. We've downloaded our pix & they've brought back hundreds of wonderful moments and it already seems too long ago. We are determined to return.The kids are still raving about the fabulous time they had & very much appreciated your casual, comfortable style. It's probably the best family vacation we've ever had. We miss not only your beautiful country & lovely hotel but also you & Deb with your easy comfortable manner, humour & priceless advice. Hello Rick and Debbie! I just wanted to let you know what a great time I had at your place! It was so beautiful as well as fun! Every activity we did was awesome and I really appreciate your advice as we didn't have to do any guesswork! It was so nice to go out and do really intense things like surfing, zip chording and then come back to such a great place to relax! Bill and I want to thank you for the wonderful time we had staying at your estate and also for all the helpful advice that allowed us to have such a wonderful experience in beautiful Costa Rica. After our visit, we all wanted to shout to everyone( and we have!) that Rancho Armadillo is one of the most unique settings in all of Costa Rica. We have traveled all around the country and have not found another place like it! The serenity, ambiance,beautiful surroundings, excellent accommodations, wonderful breakfasts, the incredible dinner prepared and served by our most gracious hosts, the close proximity to town and great restaurants, the availability of tours and activities, make staying with you a must! Rancho Armadillo is one of the most amazing places I have ever been. It is a home away from home...the difference is this home has views of the ocean, beautiful flowers/vegetation, a platform full of hammocks, a great pool and the best staff ever to help with whatever you may need during your stay. This is the perfect destination for one who is looking for equal parts relaxation and adventure. Be sure to ask the owner for his best picks of non-tourist destinations for adventure--think chartered sail boats for a day of snorkeling, hidden local waterfalls, hooking you up with a surfer for a day of lessons, or a canopy tour recommendation so you can fly with the monkeys. You can close out your days with a view of an amazing night sky full of stars, be sure to ask for the lights around the property to be dimmed to enjoy it to the fullest!

Dear Rick and Debbie, Returning home is quite a challenge after being in Costa Rica ....computers, traffic, stress and having to wear shoes again! Skip and I keep returning in our minds to the wonderful experiences we had and want to thank you for all the time and effort you put into making our trip so very memorable. Thanks to you, we were able to get a glimpse into the real Costa Rica -- the waterfall hidden from the tourist eye, the tortilla factory in Santa Cruz, the horseback ride with William into the hills and all the hints and ideas you gave us about our time on the road while driving across the country. We truly felt that Rancho Armadillo was the perfect choice for our stay in Coco. There's nothing like getting up with the sun and sitting on your deck in a hammock overlooking the Pacific while listening to howler monkeys in the trees....or floating in the warm swimming pool (along with a frog or two) while watching the sun set over the ocean. We miss the leisurely lifestyle and the wonderful adventures. We miss the rice and beans (and the tequila). We miss the dirt roads and the potholes and the dogs on every corner... Hola Rick -- So I'm sitting at my desk on a rainy, cool afternoon in Washington, DC, overlooking the airport ramp and parking lot, and decided I needed a Coco fix...  I pulled up your website to glance at the photos of the view from your (and indirectly our) vistas.  To my happy surprise, I also saw the mention of our land purchase in your May newsletter.  Just wanted to thank you for including us in your news, and for welcoming us into the estate.  Our visit was relaxing and memorable, and we thank you again for all of your Ranchadillo hospitality, bird/insect/animal/flora and fauna advice, and just plain good company!  We will be back as soon as the schedules of our work life allow, and look forward to seeing Debbie at that time too.  Until then, we'll be living vicariously through you.  :-)  What a drag that for now work has to interfere with living la pura vida in Coco.

Hola Rick, A belated, but nevertheless sincere "thank you" for our 4 days at the Rancho Armadillo a few weeks ago. Through your efforts to make us feel as comfortable as possible, you ensured that we could start, continue and finish our vacation in Costa Rica in a great frame of mind, armed with loads of helpful information, tips and suggestions. Our room was just great, the pool and facilities wonderful, and you were a most gracious host. We loved eating out in the evening - again following your recommendations - and just to veg out for 4 days was the perfect antidote for a 7 - month winter season! Our travels and accommodations after we left you went extremely well. In fact, the best tip you gave us was Playa Carillo. We ended up staying there for our final 3 days, and it was just fabulous - the beach, and the place we stayed (El Sueno).We shall be definitely be returning to Costa Rica again, so may well see you some time in the future.

Rancho Armadillo is the most fabulous place I have ever visited. We loved Costa Rica. Debbie and Rick are fantastic hosts. No only did they plan our unforgettably beautiful wedding, they entertained our 26 friends and family for 1 full week. Not a day went by where we didn't have some sort of activity available to us. We enjoyed Surfing, Horseback riding, a Waterfall hike, Canopy rides, Boat trip with snorkeling, Spa arrangements at the estate and many nights of wonderful dinners and socializing. They were also kind enough to plan our wedding rehearsal pig roast & bonfire. For anyone considering getting married in Costa Rica …..go for it, you will not be disappointed. Getting married abroad can be someone intimidating because you are stepping out on blind faith that everything will be to your liking but you can rest assured that Debbie and Rick will take care of you and your event will turn out perfectly. I have nothing but great things to say about the Rancho Armadillo Estate and all of our family and friends would agree. We can't wait to get back. Thanks again Debbie and Rick…..we all love you! Hi Rick, Thanks again for a wonderful time.  We loved Rancho Armadillo!!!   It's a special place and we really enjoyed meeting you.  Felt like I learned more about Costa Rica from you than any guide book I looked at. Tamarindo was a different experience.  Had a good time, but definitely more touristy.  We appreciated your words of caution aswe could see security was a big issue at the hotels.  Pity I didn't heed your advise on the sun.  I turned over every third song…but then didn't quit!!!  It's always that last day… when you think you haven't gotten a tan… that you throw caution (or the higher level sunscreens)  to the wind. The boys loved the surfing…or attempts at it.  Everyone “got up” …but just barely.  Not ready for Witches Rock yet.  We never really left the beaches (Tamarindo and Playa Grande) or the pools.   Glad we did activities from your place. Barbara Hardy  (Chris, Stuart and Matthew) barbhardy@bellsouth.net

Hello! We are very late with our thank you's....but we have been thinking almost everyday about our wonderful honeymoon in Costa Rica at Ranch Armadillo this past June.  We had an absolutely wonderful time in paradise and cannot wait for our next trip.  We have been telling everyone what a great time we had.  We feel like we had the whole country to ourselves, it was so romantic.  There were no crowds, virtually no one was around.  I cannot see why this was considered off season, since we had absolutely beautiful and sunny weather the whole time, except for some really cool lightning a few of the nights.We especially appreciate the hospitality that you and Debbie showed us.  We felt more like guests in your home than customers.  You made us so comfortable, yet we had a ton of privacy.  We really liked the way you helped plan our day each morning.  Every place you sent us never disappointed.  We agree that two the highlights of the trip were the wonderful aromatherapy massage with Sue and then when we went to the waterfall you sent us to and we were the only ones there. Hola Rick, We all had a wonderful time with you, your daughter, Kaz and Nils over the holidays.  I wasn't sure how well staying in one spot for 10 days would work but what a place to spend 10 days in - just beautiful, and you could not have been a better host.  Got a kick out of the photos in the January newsletter. We think of you every time we look up at the stars at night and wish we were there. It was below freezing for almost seven weeks after we got home - had a 100 degree temperature shift on the day we got back. Ron and I had the best vacation of our lives, thanks to our stay at Ranch Armadillo and the great hospitality of you and Debbie! We loved Costa Rica and its people, enjoyed the restaurants and attractions that you recommended to us and we thank you especially for the personal attention that you both gave us. Rick, I want to thank you and Debbie for making our stay at Rancho Armadillo such a special one.  We have been raving about our experience there since we left.  It was the single best lodging experience we have ever had (and we have stayed in many four and five star hotels worldwide).  It was the combination of the spacious room, bar with ocean view, 24 hour ocean sea breeze, birds galore, bats hanging in the eaves, quiet poolside evenings, fresh mangos, iguanas and 200 year old Guanacaste trees, orchids, artifacts in the garden and a great breakfast every morning.  Most of all, your hospitality was unbeatable.  We did not want to leave and definitely want to return some day. Take care and keep up the good work.

Well alas we are home again. What a wonderful time we had... and thank you. Tonight we showed family our video and photos, and ya' know... it never does it justice...Luckily sobriety prevailed long enough to take some wonderful shots of your gardens, pool , views and shots of you both. Indeed we had such a unique experience with you; Saturn, Jupiter et al. The food was beautiful, the company equal....... I Gotta gloat a little... Vick and I did a little surfing ourselves!!!

What an incredible time we had at your lovely estate. By far it was the most relaxing place we stayed. All your extra touches were so much appreciated. Rick, the dinner you prepared for us was outstanding - we have gone over the recipes over and over in our heads so not to forget. Each breakfast was gratefully appreciated as well and supplied me with more than enough energy to get us through all our exploring. Regarding shopping, Deb, you were right on - you can't beat the prices offered in your area. We were all very grateful for that tip - especially the girls. For me it was the best vacation we have ever had. So relaxing and beautiful. The slow pace really aided in the enjoyment. I must admit the Bagaces Waterfall was a highlight for me ( the photo's prove it, my eyes are wide open like a child's on adventure)
